River at Aranga Backpackers
Kerikeri River runs through Aranga Backpackers, and is an awesome place to sit and chill out, go swimming, swing and splash into the river from our rope swing, or use or free kayaks and dinghies and paddle up and down the river. There’s also some really awesome swimming holes if you take a short wander upstream a bit.
Nestled in lush native bush, is Rainbow Falls, a spectacular 27 metre high waterfall. Take a 10 minute stroll to the falls or head off for the longer, but far more scenic, 1-2 hour walk up the Kerikeri River.
Some of New Zealand’s most photographed beaches and bays are just a short drive from Aranga Backpackers. Opito Bay is a lovely safe beach just 15 minutes from Kerikeri Top 10 Holiday Park. You can take a boat out to catch some fish, or just relax on the soft sand and splash about in the waves. A short walk from Opito Bay will take you to Ake Ake Point, where beautiful views right over the Bay of Islands await you.
Matauri Bay is a stunning beach about one hour’s drive from Aranga Backpackers. Matauri Bay is renowned for world-class diving opportunities, including exploring the wreck of the Greenpeace flagship, the Rainbow Warrior.
The ridge about Matauri Bay gives breathtaking views out to the Cavalli Islands and a memorial to the Rainbow Warrior is here. Te Ngaere Bay is also close to Matauri Bay and is a popular and very safe beach. Pack your sunscreen and stay the whole day.
Takou Bay is a beautiful surf beach that very few tourists know about – and we’d prefer it’s kept that way, so we won’t give you the directions until you arrive here! Just 25 minutes from Aranga Backpackers, Takou Bay is a real slice of paradise.
We’ve only mentioned 4 beaches here, but the entire Northland coast is pure magic – so just jump in your rental car, take a drive, and you will definitely find a gorgeous white-sand beach to relax on.
